Genel Bilgi Jeoloji Mühendisliği Bölümü, 1993 yılında Kocaeli Üniversitesi Mühendislik Fakültesi bünyesinde kurulmuştur. Jeoloji Mühendisliği Bölümü, yaklaşık 2500m2 lik kapalı alanı ile 4 derslik, 5 laboratuar çalışma alanlarına sahiptir. Bölümümüz birçok kurum ve kuruluşlarla ortak projeler yürütmektedir. Genel Bilgi
(İngilizce)
The Department of Geological Engineering at the Kocaeli University was founded under the Faculty of Engineering in 1993. In the department, education and research activities are carried out in 4 classrooms and 5 laboratories. Additionally, various government/private sectors sponsored or supported projects are successfully conducted at the Department of Geological Engineering.
A geological engineer is able to apply geology into solving problems of human in earth and earth systems. Because it is a cross-discipline, a geological engineer can dedicate his work primarily on residential-site-selection, preparation of site-use planning, evaluation of rock and ground strength, environmental impact studies, hydrology, ground waters and engineering, evaluation of fossil-based energy sources, earthquake, soil contamination, waste disposal site selection, exploration and evaluation of mineral deposits and fossil-fuels. Thus, geological engineers can be employed by private and governmental institutions regarding all the fields and work given above.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Lateral transfer is possible for students of master's and doctorate programmes who have successfully completed at least one semester at another department of the same university and the same institute, or at a master's and doctorate programme of another equivalent institute of another higher education institute. According to the related bylaws, the courses that a lateral transfer student should take within the scope of 'Programme Adjustment' are determined by the committee of the relevant department. The determination of which and how many of the previously taken courses should be recognized within scope of the minimum course load, is suggested by the advisor and the committee of the relevant department,as well. "Full Recognition" is provided upon the approval of those courses by the board of chairs of relevant institute.

Kocaeli University guarantees in advance that all credits gained and courses received by an Erasmus student after the mobility abroad will be fully recognized and transferred into Kocaeli University system and upon arrival with the approval of the authorities and the student. While preparing the" Erasmus Credit Transfer and Grade Equivalency Table" the ECTS grades are transmitted to Kocaeli University grading system.

Turkish higher education institutions are in the start-up phase about the recognition of informal and non formal education. However; computer and foreign language skills that students improve on their own, are evaluated through exemption examinations by the university. Students who prove to be proficient in such exams are exempted from related course(s).

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Evaluation of a class within a semester is undertaken via midterm tests, projects, seminars, presentations, field works, quizzes, homework, and laboratory works and so forth. Midterm test is not a necessity. Grading and evaluation of a semester work have to remain within %30-%70 range of the overall; yet, the grading scheme is announced to students at the beginning of the semester. Midterm and final are given at the dates that were indicated in the academic calendar. The class instructor determines the overall grade by taking midterm, final, other evaluation methods, and attendance into account. One cannot be graded on a first-time-taken-class unless 70 and 80% in-class and laboratory attendance are taken, respectively. Those students that fail to complete class attendance requirements are given a failed grade (D). Lack of attendance on a class taken for the first time necessitates repeat of enrolment for a second time. If a class is failed yet attendance requirement is completed, then class attendance is not required upon taking it for the second time. A class can be defined as a body of work-load done in a semester. Evaluation of a class is completed as late as the end of a semester and is converted into a grade. Grading is the reflection of a student’s work performed throughout the semester. Midterms and finals are graded using 100-point-grading scheme for all of the classes.

The equivalences and coefficients of letter grades out of 100 points is as follows.
